Lap Joint Flange a as a joint between two pieces of metal wherein the pieces overlap without changing its actual form. Although, lap joint flange don’t have a raised face, they all have common dimensions just like any other flange and hence, they are used in contrast with a “Lap Joint Stub End”. However, they are similar in looks just like slip on flanges, the only exception is that the radius at the intersection of flange face and another is the bore which is to accommodate the flanged portion of the stub end. Even so, the pressure holding capacity of lap joint flanges is amazing and the fatigue life for assembling is good too.   2. As the fluid is less in contact with the pipe, this gradually allows the cheap carbon steel flanges usage with the anti-corrosive pipes.

  4. Lap Joint flanges have the freedom to swivel around the pipe. This facilitates the lining up of opposing flange bolt holes.
  5. Lack of contact with the fluid inside the pipe leads to the greater durability of these flanges.

  7. The pressure-holding capacity of lap joint flanges is little. But it is better than that of slip-on flanges.

Basically, there are two parts of a lap joint. The first part is the stub-end which has a short pipe shape with a weld bevel at one side and a parallel shoulder at the other side which is the hub. The regular hub has a thickness of ¼ to 3/8. The back side of a hub consists of a round inner fillet which connects the sleeve and hub together. The second part of lap joint flange is the backing flange which has O.D., bolt circle, bolt hole size, etc of same ordinary dimensions. Anyhow, this part doesn’t has a raised face but at the backside there is a slight shoulder which has a square shaped cut at the center hole f the pipe. Whereas at the font you have flat face and an outer fillet is present at the center hole which matches with the stub ends fillet. The flange of the lap joint gathering moves on to the stub end before the sleeve is weld to the adjacent pipe fitting. The flange itself doesn’t go any fixing or welding anyhow. Hence, it is free to revolve for perfect alignment to who it’s connecting further. For this reason of having two parts, the Lap Joint Flange gives you budget friendly work.
