How are Flanges made? – the Process

There are 2 independent seal in the Flange design. The seal setting stress application creates the first seal at the Flange heel. The heel contact is managed for pressure values up-to 1-8 times the Flange rating at normal temperature. However, the flange is also in connection with outer surface of Flange faces for all stress levels. The 9th seal ring is the main.

Energy Supply

The elastic stored energy provides the seal ring force to the stressed seal ring. Although, the seal action may get intense if there is any heel leakage as this leakage lets the internal pressure act on the seal.

Verification & Installation

Hence, the 9th ring is retained in the ring groove as it is difficult to ensure and verify at the time of installation. Oxygen income is prohibited by 9th ring, no doubt reducing corrosion to flange faces. In addition to that, it also avoids stressed length of the bolts and seal ring.

Corrosion & Prevention

The satisfactory contact of the seal ring and the outer surface depends on the outer dust rim and the bolt circle void stops the inside fluid from corroding when in leaks.

TYPES OF FLANGES

They are produced without a bore and are often used to vacate the pipe endings, valve openings, etc. Blind flanges are the highly pressured flange types with a standpoint of lock loading. As there is no meridian inner diameter, these flanges work perfectly for higher pressured-temperature applications.

Slip-on flanges are joint with pipe with 2 fillet welds with a wall thickness of more than 3 mm. The disadvantage of using Slip-on flange is that a pipe needs to be welded and then you need to do the fitting. Also, Slip-on Flanges cannot be used to combine flange and elbow or flange and tee because they do not have a straight end.

THREADED FLANGE

These ones have the main advantage of attaching to pipe without dwelling. Though, we may use a seal weld in affiliation to a threaded connection. They come handy in extremely smaller pipes despite being available in all size and pressure ranges.

This kind of flanges was mainly developed for usage on small-size high-pressure pipes. Their electric strength almost same to that of the slip-on despite the fact that they have 50% more fatigue strength when compared to double welded slip-on flanges. Space must be there between flange and pipe and the pipe needs to be in connection with 1 fillet weld outside the flange. Space is useful to reduce the flowing pressure at the weld’s root.

The dimensions of Lap joints are same as the other flanges. Although, they don’t have any raised face as they are in a usage of conjunction with a “lap Joint Stub End”. They are almost similar to Slip-on flange except for the difference of radius at the flange face. With less pressure-holding ability, they might be applicable at all pressures. However, they sometimes slip over pipes when not welded. Despite all this, their only advantages are- free enough to spin around the pipes, less contact with fluid in a pipe.

FLANGES USAGE

Actually, the single most used product in the industry is Carbon Steel Flange. They comprise of 70% of Flange sales. Even though it is low cost and mostly available in ready stock. Flange are highly effective for low budget and low-temperature applications. The application of black oil paint prevents corrosion to oxidation. Also, it falls under ASTM A105. The second most used product is Stainless Steel Flange which comprises of 10% of our proceeds. Above all, Flange are the most trusted material for regular use. And so are they more expensive than Carbon Steel and are available in Grade SS304 & SS316 with ASTM A182. Over the years, customers prefer Flange which have a longer shelf life than Carbon Steel flanges. However, they also prefer products that are less expensive than Stainless Steel. Thus, have come into recent demand Alloy Steel Flange. They provide an intermediate route between engineer’s dilemma between project life and budget. Available in several grades such as F1, F5, F9, F11, F22, F91. We at HydroFlange offer excellent pricing for Alloy Steel Flanges. Lots of areas and sub-sea installations have dense salt water. If any of the above grades usages takes place, they will absolutely corrode. Thus depending on the salinization Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507 utilization of Flange occurs. These grades specialize in providing corrosion resistance due to their chemical composition. They are more expensive than the above grades under ASTM 182. Titanium Flange provide for sturdy Flange and light weight. ASTM is B381. For a cheaper product with light weight, clients often use Aluminum Flange. Often clients have specialized requirements. The environment is critical and subject to high corrosion, high-temperature and acid attacks. In these cases, we suggest clients use high nickel alloys such as Monel, Inconel, and Hastelloy depending on their application. They are very expensive but highly effective due to their resistance. ASTM standard for the same is B56.
